First-time central heating under ECO4: what UK households should know (2026)
Guide by ApplyFreeBoiler.uk (Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd), a heating and insulation installer in Bury, Greater Manchester. We are not the government, Ofgem or an energy supplier.
Some UK homes have never had a central heating system and rely on electric room heaters, gas fires, open fires or old storage heaters. ECO4 includes a first-time central heating measure for eligible homes. This guide explains what to check before a survey. It does not guarantee funding.
1. Confirm there is no existing central heating
First-time central heating applies where the home has no wet central heating system, meaning no boiler feeding radiators. Write down what heats each room today, including portable heaters, fires and storage heaters.
2. Check what fuel is available
Note whether the property has a mains gas connection, a gas meter, or none at all. This affects which heating system can be designed. Your network operator or supplier can confirm whether the street has gas.
3. Look at the EPC and insulation first
Look up your home on the official EPC register. Heating upgrades under ECO4 are usually designed together with insulation, so loft, cavity or solid wall insulation may be recommended in the same project.
4. Plan for the installation work
A new system means pipework, radiators in each habitable room, a boiler or heat pump, and controls such as a programmer, room thermostat and radiator valves. Think about where a boiler or outdoor unit could sit and clear access for the survey.
5. Gather eligibility evidence
Have proof of address, photo ID and any benefit award letters ready. Tenants need written consent from the landlord, and leaseholders may need freeholder consent for external pipework or units.
6. Compare local delivery data
See ECO measures by council on ApplyFreeBoiler.uk, built from DESNZ Household Energy Efficiency statistics.
7. Check eligibility
Use the ApplyFreeBoiler.uk eligibility check to see whether a first-time central heating or insulation pathway may be available for your home in England, Scotland or Wales. ECO4 is due to close on 31 December 2026.
